Matthew 1:18-25

Today we read of an adolescent woman and her betrothed on the verge of going against strong societal norms. They are affirming the divine nature of what would be considered a sinful birth. Her pregnancy falls so clearly outside the acceptable definition of values of family in their religious and cultural experience that it is breathtaking. It is a proclamation that must be seen as an irresponsible act of teen rebellion that in turn changed the coarse of Western religious history. No wonder Jesus would turn out to be such a rebel himself with parents like this.

In societies of strict conformity to unmoving ethics this birth still sounds extremely salacious and scandalous. Could we see basing a current religious movement around such imprudent and impetuous claims of youth?

So, this season in our safe, powerful society I think it is important to ponder this extremely vulnerable act of rebellion in service of religious convictions. Are our beliefs that important to us this season? Would they help us stand firm in the face of societal pressures? Remember: Salvation is near!
